Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote ~ Alexandra, Kenneth & Martijn

04.09.2017 | Events

Saturday the 2nd of September three of our athletes raced at the Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote, organised by our second home Club La Santa!

Alexandra Tondeur

For Alex it was her first race since she qualified in July for the Ironman World Championships in Kona. Perfect moment to gain some racing rhythm!

“My goal for this race was to end in the top 5. I’m happy to have achieved this goal but it was clear that I was missing some rhythm. I wasn’t powerful enough on the bike to aim for the podium today. The objective is to start in Hawaii with a fresh body so this feeling of today was exactly what my coach Luc Van Lierde had scheduled for me. Confidence boost and full focus for the last weeks of training before Hawaii!”

Martijn Dekker

Martijn started his race good coming out of the water in 2nd place afterwards he continued with a steady pace on the bike and a good half marathon resulting in a satisfying 6th place in this strong competitive field!

Kenneth Vandendriessche

Kenneth’s race was typical for his style. A comeback race. He came out of the water in 15th place 3m30 behind the leader. As soon as he got on the bike he started coming closer and closer resulting in starting the half marathon in 4th place. Eventually Kenneth finished in 4th place but Markus Rolli got disqualified after exceeding the white line in the descent multiple times.  Because of that Kenneth managed to get his second spot on an Ironman 70.3 podium this season!

Koen Janssen

Our CEO and Team Manager was also racing in this Ironman 70.3, not in the pro field but in his age group. It promised to be an exciting day because there were 7 slots available for the World Championship! The night before the race Koen made a phone call to his wife asking what to do if he somehow managed to get one of those slots. Her answer was: “do it!”.

Race day came and Koen raced good on this tough course resulting in finishing in 8th place. One place short of the slot for the World Championship. At the closing ceremony things changed. The first athlete who was awarded a slot refused it, making the slot move to Koen! Congrats Koen!
